The Tumaini Scholarship & Mentorship Program was established in 2011 to address one of the community’s most pressing needs: access to education. Many children in underserved families face the risk of dropping out due to financial challenges, lack of guidance, or limited opportunities.
Tumaini — meaning hope — bridges this gap by offering school fees support, mentorship, and life-skills training. What began as a small initiative has now impacted over 700 students, with more than 80% progressing to universities, colleges, or vocational training, breaking cycles of poverty and inspiring the next generation.
Students are identified through referrals from local schools, churches, and community leaders, followed by an application process to share their background and needs.
Each application is carefully reviewed, with home visits and interviews conducted to confirm genuine need and assess the student’s potential to thrive under the program.
A dedicated committee makes the final selection. Successful students and their guardians are onboarded, paired with mentors, and guided through expectations for the scholarship and mentorship journey.
Mentorship is at the heart of Tumaini. Each student is paired with a mentor — often a volunteer, professional, or Tumaini alumnus — who walks with them through their academic and personal journey.
Held three times a year (April, August, November) to cover leadership, life skills, and spiritual growth.
